overview
Without you, we're nothing. That's the hard reality of running a charity - we need your help to survive. So, please, can you find it in your hearts to help us help almost 1,000 deserving animals who call SARA home?

You may be surprised to learn that SARA's operating expenses are approximately $800,000 to one million annually, and our average costs to care and feed each resident are $1,000 annually. Every month we use over 24,000 lbs. of dry dog food, 500 lbs. of dry cat food, 60 bales of hay, 300 lbs. goat feed, and 600 lbs. hog feed. We use over 1,000 lbs. of cat litter each week!

Other expenses include:
Medical care
Vaccinations
Heart worm preventative
Flea/tick prevention
Spay/neuter expenses
Full-time staff
Electricity and water

To help understand what your donations fund, we have provided a list of our typical monthly expenses.

SARA is recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization, supported by donations. Your donation to SARA is fully tax deductible to the extent of the law.

leave a legacy
You can make arrangements to ensure that SARA will continue to help animals for years to come by including SARA in your Will. A bequest to SARA is a wonderful way to express your legacy of love for animals. You can make your bequest for a specific sum, a piece of property or the residue of your estate.

Your first step, once you decide to leave a gift, is to contact your attorney to help draw up your will.

To include SARA in your will, the following information is provided for your convenience:

1. Spell out the entire name of our organization: Southern Animal Rescue Association.
2. Include our permanent mailing address: 1050 Rawhide Road, Seguin, TX 78155-0548.
3. List our non-profit federal tax identification number: 74-2790363

Generally, this sample can be used to make a bequest to SARA in your will:

"I give and bequeath to Southern Animal Rescue Association, 1050 Rawhide Road, Seguin, TX 78155, Federal Tax ID Number 74-2790363, the sum of $_________ (or describe real or personal property or portion of the estate) to be used for general purposes."

Please note: this information is not intended to be financial planning, tax or legal advice.

planned giving
gifts of real estate
Giving Real Estate is a way to further our work, while providing you with substantial tax benefits. A gift of a house, farm, vacation home, office building, undeveloped land, or other marketable property is a wonderful way to help SARA's animals. You may select a way to give that best suits your needs. For example, you may choose to receive a lifetime income or retain lifetime use of your property.

gifts of retirement plan assets
Many individuals have accumulated monies in tax-deferred retirement accounts, which include profit-sharing plans, IRAs, and 401(k)s. These accounts are popular because the contributions are made with pre-tax dollars and the assets in the accounts grow tax-deferred. However, funds withdrawn from these accounts are usually taxed at both high income and estate tax rates. It is possible that at death, less than $30 of $100 in a retirement account will reach non-spouse beneficiaries.

Therefore, individuals planning to make charitable gifts at death should consider using retirement accounts to fulfill their wishes. By giving retirement account assets, donors avoid both income and estate taxes that would otherwise be due. Other less heavily taxed assets are then available to fulfill bequests to loved ones. As a result, loved ones receive more after tax.

gifts of stock
Gifts of stocks or bonds to SARA help you receive a twofold income tax benefit: a charitable deduction for the full present fair market value, and no tax on the appreciation. The best way for both you and the animals to benefit is to have your broker transfer your stocks directly to SARA. That way, you can realize the best tax savings.
Talk to your attorney and/or broker about making the types of gifts listed above.

honor someone special
There may be no better way to honor someone special or remember a loved one than by making a memorial or tribute gift.

When making your gift, please complete a donation form (see our "related downloads" section on this page) and attach an explanation that includes the name of the person you are memorializing or honoring and where you would like the acknowledgement sent.
