Together We Make A Difference

A Peek Behind Our Barn Doors

SARA stands for Society For Animal Rescue & Adoption. Founded in 1996, SARA has grown into one of the largest sanctuaries in the world, with no fewer than 750 animals in our care at any given time.

When outside adoption is not possible, our animals live at the sanctuary for the duration of their natural lives. Euthanasia is only employed in the true sense of the word: when an animal is suffering with no chance for recovery. No animal is ever killed for convenience.

Our slogan has always been “Unconditional Life” and by that we mean that SARA seeks to save as many animals as possible regardless of species, special health needs, or temperament.

SARA is a 501 C 3 Non-profit organization. DLN 74-2790363.

We take in animals based on our capacity at any given time. Please use our contact us form or email: tracy@sarasanctuary.org with your situation, including any further support you’d be able to offer the animal.

Can I volunteer or visit?

We are actively looking for volunteers in various roles such as Animal Care Assistant, Dog Walkers, Cat Socialisers, Maintenance Support, Event Volunteers, Tour Guides, Photography & Wideography Volunteers.

We host Volunteer Orientations on the first Saturday of every month from 11AM to 2PM.

If you would like to arrange a group volunteering experience, this must be scheduled ahead of time.

Please use our contact us form or email: rebecca@sarasanctuary.org with your interests and availability.

For visit requests:

We are open to the public between 12pm and 3pm every day; however, we prefer that visits are scheduled ahead of time so we can ensure we have adequate staff to give you a full visitor experience. If you would like to arrange a group visit, this must be done ahead of time and cannot be accommodated on the day.

Please use our Contact Us form or email: rebecca@sarasanctuary.org with your visitor request.

What is the difference between a rescue and a sanctuary?

Animal rescue groups or organizations are dedicated to pet adoptions. These groups take abandoned, abused, or stray animals and attempt to find suitable homes for them.

Animal sanctuaries provide a permanent home for animals, allowing them to live out their lives in a safe and peaceful environment.

SARA incorporates both of these models into our mission. We rescue and rehabilitate animals that have been abused or discarded, and provide them with a safe place to live. We do keep some of the animals on the property to live out their lives, but we adopt out as many as we can to loving homes.

Where does my donation go?

Your donation will be used to support caring for the animals, including food, shelter, staff costs and further fundraising efforts.
